Welcome to Orvieto

City of the Magnificent Gothic Cathedral

Orvieto is one of the most famous villages of Italy between Umbria and Lazio. Particularity of the town is that it rises on a tuff cliff, particular magmatic rock used also in domestic buildings.

One of the major points of interest of Orvieto is undoubtedly the Duomo, formally " cathedral basilica of Santa Maria Assunta". Masterpiece of Gothic architecture of Central Italy, it has been recognized as an Italian national monument. In January 1889 Pope Leo XIII elevated it to the dignity of a minor basilica: since then thousands of visitors, Italians and foreigners, have come to admire its grandeur and wonders.

The well of Saint Patrick

The well was designed by the architect Antonio Sangallo the Younger between 1527 and 1537 on the suggestion of Pope Clement VII. The collection from the bottom was through the use of mules and the structure represented a supply of water in case of siege.

The name "St Patrick’s Well" was given in honor of an Irish legend that sees the construction of Orvieto resemble the cave, located near Lake Lough Derg in the Republic of Ireland, where St Patrick went to meditate. That cave was said to also symbolize the gateway to Paradise and, for this reason, Saint Patrick encouraged the faithful to venture inside the cavity and reach the bottom to atone for their sins and enter the Kingdom of God.

The medieval quarter

It develops on the west side of the cliff on which Orvieto rises and was the first part that was populated. For this, the medieval quarter represents the oldest part of the city and includes Via della Cava, for a long time the main access of the city.

Through the streets of the medieval district you can enjoy views and really exciting with the houses built near the tuff spurs and attached to each other. Very impressive the path along the "ripa Medici" and the one that leads from the square where the church of San Giovanni leads to the ancient church of San Giovenale passing right over the arch of Porta Maggiore. From here you have an overview of the Cava and the particular urban structure of the neighborhood.

The pit of the quarry

It is a well of Etruscan origin deep 36 meters that is located in the medieval district of Orvieto, in the area that in the past housed a quarry of materials used to build. Dug by hand in the typical lithoid tuff of Orvieto, it was found in 1984 and quickly became a very popular tourist attraction.

Inside its structure, divided into different areas and niches, you can still see the remains of a baking oven of a medieval ceramic workshop as well as a particular cavity dug into the tuff used as a cellar. Throughout the year the well can be visited in complete safety and, during the Christmas period, it is now customary theater of religious themed performances, traditional event known as "The Nativity in the Well": original artistic representation of the Nativity theme.

The National Archaeological Museum

The museum offers an exhibition of Etruscan finds found during recent excavations in the territory of Orvieto. There are materials of ancient and new discovery from the northern necropolis of Crocifisso del Tufo.

In one room there are some equipments recovered during the excavation in the necropolis of Porano, one of the smaller centers that stood on the cliff. The burials are of high level and in some cases have been embellished with wall paintings, among the few examples at least in northern inner Etruria. The frescoes represent an extraordinary cross-section of social life of the Etruscan civilization and are a rarity at the national level.

Bolsena Lake

The fifth largest lake in Italy

Lake Bolsena, the fifth largest in Italy, is located in the upper Lazio, on the border with Umbria and Tuscany, in the main caldera of the volcanic complex Vulsinio. The towns, rich in history, both on the banks and on the ridges of the Volsini mountains, are many.

Starting from Bolsena and following the panoramic road clockwise, we find in order: Bolsena, the city that gave its name to the lake, Montefiascone, with the most beautiful overall view of the lake, Marta, main and active fishing port, Capodimonte, on the picturesque promontory that juts out towards the lake, Valentano, with its wide panorama dominating the basin of the lake, Gradoli, on a tuff spur inside the crater fence, Grotte di Castro, retains the charm of the medieval structure, San Lorenzo Nuovo, a perfect example of 18th century urban planning, Isola Bisentina, attractive and sinuous as a beautiful woman and Isola Martana, the famous island of Queen Amalasunta.

Civita of Bagnoregio

Ancient beauty challenging time and erosion

Visiting Bagnoregio is certainly one of the most exciting experiences that you can do in the territory of Tuscia. The beauty of its Civita, known as "the city that dies", makes this small town of Viterbo a popular destination for national and international tourism.

Civita is increasingly a very popular place for lovers, who together walk on the bridge and arrive in the village to exchange promises of eternal love. We are in the land of San Bonaventura, father of the Church and central figure in the Middle Ages.

Several collapses, recorded over the centuries, have plunged into the valley churches and beautiful structures. Unfortunately lost forever. But it is perhaps precisely this sense of precariousness, of fragility, that makes this place even more suggestive
